Sport Bikes
The sprinters of the motorcycle family, sport bikes have incredible acceleration, high speed potentials, and unrivaled performance packed in a sleek and aerodynamic frame. Wider tires allow for tighter turns and advanced suspension provides a smooth riding experience at any speed. Riders sit in a hunched-forward position and high foot pegs bring the legs in close, helping improve aerodynamics and stabilizing the center of gravity.
Sport bikes engine displacements range between 248cc and around 1,441cc.
Touring
If sport bikes are the sprinters, touring motorcycles are the cross-country runners. These bulky machines are built for long-distance rides and have the storage capacity, fuel efficiency, and comfort features necessary to make them possible and even pleasant. Windshields, broader frames, and better seating make touring bikes perfect for exploring the countryside and going across state lines.
Touring motorcycle engine displacements range from 645cc to around 1,923cc.
Cruisers
If you picture a motorcycle in your mind, chances are you’re picturing a cruiser. These motorcycles are the middle-ground, built for high-speed cruising through city streets and around the highway. They’ve got great acceleration and handling and come in two subcategories.
The “chopper” is named after its chopped-down aesthetic and is fashioned after classic motorcycles from the 1950’s. The ape-hanger handlebars and extended front fork can make them tricky to handle for beginners, but they’re a favorite of mechanics and veteran riders for their customizability.
Power cruisers, as the name implies, are souped-up versions of normal cruisers with more power, larger chassis, and more modern conveniences.
Cruiser motorcycle engine displacements go from around 249cc to about 1,860cc.
Dirt Bikes
If your destination doesn’t involve pavement, you’re probably going to want an off-road motorcycle, better known as a dirt bike. These machines are smaller, lighter, and less powerful than their street bike counterparts, but they’re much better able to navigate the tight and varied confines of the woods, dunes, and mud holes in off-roading parks. Engine displacements are only around 50cc to about 500cc, but they still pack a punch.
