What They Have in Common
It’s useful to know the things that all or most sport bikes have in common before you learn about the differences. For instance, every single model is designed for maximum speed and performance, so compared to other street-legal motorcycles, they tend to be on the lighter side. They utilize materials like carbon fiber and aluminum alloys to get the right mix of durability and weight, since too much weight will slow the bike down.
They’re also built to be aerodynamic, which tends to lead to sleek and compact frames with acute angles at the front. A low ground clearance adds to the aerodynamics. Sport bikes also have powerful brake pads with multi-piston calipers since being able to stop is as or more important than going fast, and advanced suspension systems keep you comfortable throughout the ride. Both tires are wider than average to help with tight turns, and every sport bike has a powerhouse of an engine.
Different Types
That said, there’s plenty of variation in sport bikes. They’re divided into classes by weight and each have their own specialties and benefits.
Lightweight
Sometimes also referred to as “entry-level” or “beginner” sport bikes, lightweight models are the easiest to handle thanks to a smaller engine, typically 500cc or less. They’re less powerful and lighter to make for more manageable speeds and better handling, but they still pack a punch. Unless you’re looking to race, they might be a good fit.
Middleweight
Middleweight, mid-level, mid-sized, or supersport bikes are favorites for advanced riders, but they can still be good for newer riders as well. Engine displacement is typically between 500cc and 800cc and they’re great for general-purpose bikes or casual track-riding. They still won’t be fast enough to compete with, however.
Heavyweight
Anyone looking for the ultimate challenge and a chance at winning competitive races will need a heavyweight sport bike, or “superbike.” Engine displacements on these are over 1,000cc and they’re the peak of agility and speed.
