Go-Karts Classes
As we already mentioned, there are various types of go-karts and they fall under different classes. For younger riders, there are the Kid Karts (for ages 5 - 7), Cadet Class karts (for ages 7 - 12) and Junior Class karts (for ages 12 - 15). These models are more for fun, though they can be used competitively. You’ll get speeds from around 30 mph to 65 mph with a greater focus on safety.
For older riders, you have the Senior Class (for 15-year-olds and above), Masters Class (for 32-year-olds and older) and the Super Masters Class (for 45 years and older). With these machines, you’ll get higher speeds and a greater focus on performance. Keep in mind that the type of go-kart you should get is not strictly dependent on age, as your weight also plays a part in which class you can race.
Types of Go-Karts
When buying a go-kart, think of what you want to do with it. Are you looking for fast-paced fun on the tracks or do you want to race competitively? No matter what your goal is, there’s a go-kart out there ready to have your back.
Pedal Karts:
Almost like 4-wheeled bicycles, these karts have pedals that teach smaller children to steer and control a vehicle. These low-lying vehicles are very light and easy to maneuver. Models with single gears will give you speeds of about 5mph, while models with multiple gear ones may go a little faster.
Electric Karts:
These sit lower than pedal versions, are a bit heavier, and have good acceleration. Though you can get around 40 minutes of track time with a single charge, these models do take a while to charge. You can get these go-karts in both dirt and street versions. You can also get them in adult or kid versions.
Gas Karts:
Generally the fastest models, these heavier and speedier vehicles aren’t suitable for small kids. These models are more complex and require more maintenance than other types. They’re also gas-powered, so you don’t have to wait to recharge your kart; just fill it up and go!
Things to Keep in Mind
Generally, go-karts are bought either for fun or racing, so the model you get will depend on the features you need. The higher speed machines cost more and aren’t necessary for someone who doesn’t plan to race.
If this is your first go-kart, we suggest you buy new instead of used. Go-karts are put through some grueling challenges and experience quite a bit of wear and tear. Since go-karts do get damaged with use, always buy from a dealer who carries parts or is ready to get them for you, like Freedom Cycles. Otherwise, your go-kart will be sitting in your garage for long periods of time.
