Keeping Your Dog Safe on Your UTV
Plenty of UTV owners bring their dogs along for the ride. Sometimes they want company while exploring the woods. Sometimes they are hunting and need their hunting buddy. Whatever the reason, you can both enjoy a fun (and safe) journey as long as you take the properproactive steps. We created the following guide to keeping your dog safe on your UTV below. For all your side by side needs, visit Freedom Cycles. We proudly serve those in Kansas City, Missouri.
Transporting Your Dog
Your dog can't just freely roam your UTV. He could jump or fall off the moving vehicle and injure himself. He could try to sit on your lap, which hurts your ability to steer. He could be a safety threat to himself and to you.
Instead, you'll need to put her in a crate. This keeps her snug, safe, and secure during the side by side ride. You'll want to use tie downs to connect it to the bed of your side x side. You'd be amazed at how easily a crate can slide right off even when you are traveling at a slow speed.
Don't forget to take into account the weather! If it's going to be cold, put a kennel cover on to keep your dog warm. If it's going to be hot, make sure there is plenty of ventilation of fresh air. You don't want your poor dog to be stuck somewhere stuff and burning up.
Making Positive Experiences
Keep in mind crates (and traveling in a crate) could be a stressful experience for a dog. You'll want to work up a comfort level to both. That way, riding in your UTV will be a positive (instead of anxious) experience for your dog. First, get him used to the crate by using toys and treats to show the crate is fun. Then get him used to the side by side. Take really short trips at first and slowly build up speed and trip length. Go at your dog's pace and before you know it, he will be dying to go out on the side x side.
Packing
You will need to bring along some items to keep your dog comfy and cozy on your trip. First, there are the essentials. A water bowl keeps her hydrated. You can get a collapsible bowl if you are looking to save space. You'll also want a first aid kit so you can address any minor health issues along the way. A brush helps you get out those stickers that will cling to her fur.
There are items that aren't crucial but make the experience better. If your dog wears an LED collar light, it'll be easier to spot him at night. Adding a windshield to your side x side will help block wind and debris, making the ride more enjoyable for you both.
Extended Trips
Sometimes you want to pack your weekend or vacation with side by side riding, so you'll take a longer trip. Your dog can still join you! Pack along any medications, dog food, and a bed. Try to keep to your normal routine (this will help reduce the stress that comes with unknown situations). With the right supplies and planning, your dog can have a blast joining your trip!
